A Fresh Start for 2021!

I invite you to join me for an Exhale: Pause & Reset at the Jekyll Island Club Resort in coastal Georgia. The upcoming retreat will have two sessions: December 30, 2020 to January 3, 2021 and January 6, 2021 to January 10, 2021.

As a Professor of Color, wife, and mother of four, I often fantasize about having metaphorical pause and reset buttons. When I push pause: the world around me stops, I complete my never-ending scholarship, teaching, service, and personal ‘to do’ list, and sometimes I even get ahead. If things are too chaotic I hit reset: my ‘to do’ list resets to my usual list of activities and the backlog is erased. Ironically, I am penalized for indulging this fantasy—by taking time off work I return to an even longer list. I’m guessing you can relate.

Over the past 17 years, I’ve utilized writing retreats to pause and reset. My quarterly retreats allow me to work smarter, not harder. I use them to augment my daily writing practice (I utilize the method created by the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity). They pause my ‘to do’ list by protecting time for substantial progress on a writing project. They reset my ‘to do’ list through giving me space to reframe the best way to approach to the never-ending demands on my time.

In addition to a lush resort setting and opportunity to experience the local culture, history, and cuisine, the retreat also includes developmental editing sessions with Rose Ernst, daily guided meditation sessions, and individual coaching sessions focused on individually tailoring how writing retreats can increase your scholarly productivity and make space for the rest of your life. And a glass of wine.

This retreat is designed to support those who self-identify as women of color and their allies.  Although developed based on the needs of those in the academy, it is suitable for those in other professions who endeavor to make significant progress on a major writing project(s). Here are some pictures from previous retreats:

I have facilitated writing retreats for both small and large groups over the past 12 years. Some have been for small groups of faculty that provided structured feedback sessions in addition to large blocks of dedicated writing time. Last year I facilitated a writing retreat at the Annual Lutie A. Lytle Black Women Law Faculty Workshop & Writing Retreat at Penn State School of Law.
