Writing Retreats and Workshops
Exhale. Write. Connect.
Whether you’re seeking uninterrupted time to focus on your writing or looking to pair your retreat with innovative professional development, our retreats are designed to meet the unique needs of your group.
Most writers have regular routines yet long for deeper immersion—time to think, create, and write in community. Our writing retreats offer that focused space, with a balance of productivity, inspiration, and connection.
Each retreat includes:
- Guided writing sprints with built-in movement and reflection breaks
- Visioning exercises to support clarity and creativity
- The option to choose one of the following 90-minute workshops, or book the retreat as a stand-alone experience:
Sparking Academic Joy
How to Develop a Joy-Filled Writing Practice
Academic joy doesn’t have to be an oxymoron. If you would like more joy in your writing practice, this workshop is for you. You’ll learn how different types of writing retreats and practices can spark more joy in your writing practice. This workshop builds upon my co-authored book, Sparking Academic Joy: Writing Retreats for Scholars.
How to Develop a Culturally Relevant Writing Practice
Reclaiming Purpose and Identity in Your Writing
Do you ever feel disconnected from your writing? Does the why of your writing practice feel like a distant memory? Or do you have to function outside of your cultural frame and intersecting identities to succeed? This workshop helps you reconnect with why you write and provides strategies to fuel your writing practice daily.
Sustainable Serenity
Remain Productive While Centering Wellness
Frustrated by life’s changes? Guided by Octavia Butler’s insight that change is both inevitable and transformative, this workshop reveals how sustainable serenity and productivity emerge through centering your wellness and building reliable systems of support and accountability amid life’s constant changes.

Dr. Rose Ernst and Dr. Angelique M. Davis co-facilitate two workshop offerings: Sparking Academic Joy and Racial Gaslighting. The curricula for both workshops were jointly developed and are typically delivered together. Because Dr. Ernst is based in the UK and works remotely, co-facilitated workshops are offered in virtual or hybrid formats, with Davis on site and Dr. Ernst joining online. These hybrid sessions are well established and run smoothly. When an entirely in-person format is required—such as when paired with an Exhale Writing Retreat or upon client request—the workshop may be delivered by Davis as a solo facilitator.
Our workshops are customized to your organization’s needs. They are not passive lectures; every session includes interactive elements. In general, the longer the workshop, the more room there is for interaction and hands-on practice.
