Upcoming Exhale: Pause & Reset Writing Retreats

*Due to COVID-19 the 2021 Jekyll Island Exhale: Pause & Reset Writing Retreat
is postponed until further notice.

Registration Per Session Includes

Concentrated Writing Time

Four full days of distraction-free writing in a facilitated group setting or on your own. Click here to see a sample schedule.

Food and Drink

All meals, beverages, and snacks (except dinner Friday, which is on your own) are included in the cost of the retreat.  This includes two dinners prepared by local chefs.

Developmental Editing Sessions

Prior to the retreat, you have the opportunity to have a session with a developmental editor, Rose Ernst, to clarify your writing goals and can schedule a 30-minute consultation. The goal of this consultation is to determine where you are in your writing retreat project and to clarify your goals for the retreat. You do not have to have a draft to submit to Rose prior to the retreat to schedule a consultation with her, but if you do have a project she will be able to provide more detailed feedback.  During the retreat, you have a second session to clarify and adjust your goals.

Facilitated Group Writing Sessions

Individual Assessment & Coaching

Prior to the retreat, you will complete a coaching questionnaire that will contain a series of questions about your writing style and work-life balance.  This questionnaire will help us “hit the ground running.” By the end of the retreat, you will have an individualized plan for how you can continue to utilize writing retreats to pause and reset.

Daily Guided Meditation

Optional guided meditation sessions will be available each day.

Tranquil and Historic Setting

Jekyll Island, an isolated island on the Georgia coast, remains a rich reservoir of African-American history, culture, and customs.  These islands are a vital storehouse of United States history pertaining to enslavement as well as the preservation of the Gullah Geechee history, culture, and language.  The Jekyll Island Club Resort, where the retreat is located, is also a historic site.  Over the years the resort has hosted exclusive retreats among many historical figures, such as J.P. Morgan, Vanderbilt, and Pulitzer, who shaped our nation’s history.  I selected Jekyll Island as the retreat location based upon my experiences while visiting extended family in the region.  Each visit indelibly marked my soul with the profound nature of utilizing my writing to center the experiences of African descended peoples in the United States. One thing I know for sure is that the schism created by the region’s horrific history juxtaposed with its breathtaking and tranquil setting will uniquely inspire you too.

Tuition Does NOT Include

Airfare, Hotel, and Transportation to/from the Resort

Jekyll Island is located right off the coast of Georgia, just south of Brunswick. Both the Savannah (SAV) and Jacksonville (JAX) airports are located only a short drive from the resort. Jekyll Island Club Resort is located on Jekyll Island, Georgia, off I-95 (Exit 29) approximately midway between Savannah, Georgia, and Jacksonville, Florida. Cost per room for this time begins at around $135 per night. After you register, you will be given info on how to book your room at the group rate.

There refunds or discounts for changes in travel plans:

  • 60 days or more prior to the retreat, we will return your payment minus a $500 non-refundable deposit.
